Flooded roads require great caution

Since March, much of northwest Missouri along the Missouri River has seen chronic flooding and subsequent road closures.

Now, in addition to those long-term closures, flash flooding is affecting many roads across the region.

MoDOT Communication Specialist Marcia Johnson urges drivers to avoid water-covered roadways and notify MoDOT if no barricades have been places yet.

"If you see water over the roadway, turn around, don't drown.  Don't go around barricades. Even a little bit of water moving across the roadways as small as 6 inches can move a vehicle traveling through it.  So it's better to avoid that area.  Pull over to the side of the road if you don't see barricades on that road but you did see water on it; pull over to the side of the road when you're in a safe area and give us a call at that 888-ASK-MODOT number so our crews can get out there."

With flash flooding, roads are opened and closed on short notice. To see the most up-to-date list of roadway closures due to flooding, travelers have a few options. They can download MoDOT's Traveler Information app from the app store, access MoDOT's Traveler Information Map online, or call MoDOT's 24-hour customer service line at 1-888-ASK MODOT.
